Ahvaz is the capital of Khuzestan province and the fourth largest city in Iran. Currently, Ahvaz is a very important transit hub that connects other parts of the country to the important ports of Abadan, Khorramshahr, Bandar-e Imam Khomeini, and Mahshahr by land, rail, and air routes. Also, with the border terminals and bazaars of Shalamcheh and Chazabe near Ahvaz, this city is directly affected by the traffic of goods and passengers and Iranian and Iraqi tourists and pilgrims. The amount of air pollution in this city is increasing day by day. The most important reason for air pollution in Ahvaz is dust and intra-city transportation. Ahvaz has a semi-desert climate. Sightseeing places in Ahvaz Ahvaz is a city known for its industrial and oil-rich resources, with a rich history of economic and political significance. Despite its untapped tourism potential, Ahvaz boasts a variety of attractions worth visiting, such as the Karun River, Abdul Hamid Bazaar, Museum of Contemporary Art, Moien Al-Tojjar Caravanserai, Catholic Church, Dadras House, and many more. History The origin of Ahvaz's construction is a topic of debate among ancient historians. Some believe it was built during the Sassanid period by the dynasty's founder, Ardeshir I, while others believe it was a city from the Elamite era that Ardeshir simply reconstructed. In the past, Ahvaz was known as "Oxien". Historical records reveal that in the early Islamic centuries, Ahvaz was one of Khuzestan's largest and most prosperous cities. According to some sources, around fifty thousand families resided in the city during the third century of the Islamic calendar. However, due to numerous conflicts in Khuzestan from the third to the fifth century AH, Ahvaz experienced insecurity and frequent robberies. It was attacked by groups such as the Zengids, Saffarids, and Daylamites, causing it to lose its status as the province's center of prosperity and centrality for around eight hundred years. Eventually, the city of Shushtar took over as the new central hub of the region.
