Shushtar

Shushtar is a city located in the north of Khuzestan province, just an hour and a half's drive from Ahvaz. It's the fourth most populated city in Khuzestan and was the province's capital from the Sassanid period until the beginning of the Pahlavi period. The people of Shushtar speak Persian with the Shushtari dialect. The city's water structures are a famous attraction that draws tourists. Shushtar has a pleasant climate, particularly at the end of winter and the beginning of spring, with a Mediterranean climate. The average annual temperature in Shushtar is 27.2 degrees Celsius. Additionally, both the Dez and Karun rivers pass through the city.

History
Shushtar has a rich history dating back to the first civilization of Iran, which was the Elam civilization. According to renowned Elamologist Walter Hines, Shushtar is believed to be the same city that was once known as Adamden during the time of Elam. The excavations and ancient discoveries made in Shushtar suggest that human habitation in the region dates back to ten thousand years ago.

The Karun and Dez rivers have had a significant impact on the history and landmarks of Shushtar, Iran. The abundance of water in this city has led to the creation of impressive water structures, which are considered engineering masterpieces by archaeologists worldwide. These structures, along with Selasal Castle, played a major role in controlling the Darion River and contributed to the city's rich history. Interestingly, Selasal Castle was not only used for water control but also served as a local governance center from the Achaemenid period to the reign of Nader Shah. Overall, Shushtar's water system comprises 13 sites, collectively known as the Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System, which is registered as a Unesco World Heritage site.
