Arg of Tabriz

The Arg of Tabriz, also known as the Arch of Alishah, stands as an imposing testament to Tabriz’s history, its massive brick structure bearing witness to the trials and tribulations this city endured.

Historical Significance

Constructed in the early 14th century during the Ilkhanate era, the Tabriz Citadel served as a formidable defensive edifice for the city and its inhabitants. Over the years, it bore the scars of wars and devastating earthquakes, and in 1911, it would find itself repurposed as a command post by Russian forces during their invasion.

Description

Once a sprawling brick citadel safeguarding the city during times of conflict, today, it remains a colossal edifice. In its heyday, it was the tallest building in Tabriz, visible from great distances in the downtown area.

The original compound featured a grand vaulted mosque, adjacent prayer halls, and libraries, a vast courtyard with a monumental pool, and a mausoleum, all encircled by protective walls. However, in the 19th century, escalating tensions between Iran and Russia transformed the structure into the city’s fortification. Military installations, including barracks and a cannon foundry, were added to the original complex.

The 20th century brought significant alterations, destroying substantial portions of this colossal complex. The aim was to preserve the original section while removing the later additions. Military installations were dismantled, and the surroundings were transformed into a park. In the late 20th century, a magnificent mosque was constructed adjacent to the citadel.

Today, this monumental construction stands as a priceless historical legacy, a somber reminder of the city’s tumultuous past. Its nighttime illumination enhances its beauty, making it an ideal spot for leisurely walks and contemplation.
