Officially inaugurated in 1962 in Tabriz, the Azerbaijan Museum houses an impressive collection of historical and artistic treasures spanning both pre-Islamic and Islamic eras.
Description
The Azerbaijan Museum in Tabriz is not limited to the confines of the Azerbaijan region; rather, it serves as a testament to the extensive history of Persia. This captivating museum proudly showcases an array of artifacts dating back over 2000 years, spanning from the Bronze Age and the Urartu period to the illustrious Qajar era. The architectural design of the museum draws inspiration from the traditional Persian houses of the Azerbaijan region, creating an immersive experience that provides valuable insights into Iran’s archaeological heritage.
The Azerbaijan Museum encompasses three auditoriums, covering a spacious 800 square meters. Within its walls, an impressive array of 12,000 historic objects is housed, with 2,300 of these artifacts displayed throughout various sections of the museum.
Upon entering, visitors are greeted by the archaeological department, narrating the rich history of Azerbaijan and other regions of Iran. This hall is home to archaeological discoveries, notably those from Jiroft in southern Iran and the Hassanlu site, situated southwest of Lake Urmia. The latter site was inhabited from the remote fifth millennium BC to the first millennium BC.
Ascending to the first floor, guests encounter a dedicated space for coins, spanning from the Achaemenid period to the 19th century, along with historical stamps. The museum also proudly presents ancient objects uncovered in Nishapur and artifacts from the Ilkhanate region.
In the basement, visitors can admire a captivating collection of sculptures crafted by Ahad Hosseini, an esteemed Iranian artist whose work is both remarkable and unique.
