Sacred Heart of Jesus Church (in Kermanshah)
The Sacred Heart of Jesus Church is a significant Armenian church situated in the western part of the country. It was constructed under the direction of Bishop Youhannan and can be found on Modares Street. Church history
The Sacred Heart of Christ Church was erected in 1914 on a piece of land spanning approximately 280 square meters in Kermanshah. Its construction dates back to the Qajar dynasty era in Iran, and Bishop Youhannan issued the order to build the church and consecrated it himself. Bishop Youhannan was a noteworthy figure in the history of Christianity in Iran, with a reputation for writing and translating foreign books on the church, as well as overseeing the construction and renovation of various other churches across the country. He also held the title of head bishop for the Catholic churches of Iran for a while. His distinguishing qualities included a commitment to religion, knowledge, great wisdom, and intelligence.
Church architecture
This church has an infrastructure that spans around 160 square meters, including the janitor’s spaces, rooms, and other facilities associated with the building. The roof of this stunning church has a gable shape and features a beautiful wooden interior. Brick is the primary material used in constructing this valuable building. On the west side of the church’s exterior, three arches are visible. The middle arch leads to the entrance of the church, while the side arches have two windows. The doors and windows of the church are adorned with brick moldings that form an exquisite arch at the top, enhancing the facade’s beauty. The south and north facades also have arches and arched windows, with the only difference being that the church windows on the south side are blocked and used as niches.
