Dating back to the Parthian or Sassanid empires, Naryn Castle, the oldest structure in Nain, was originally constructed for military purposes.
Description
Nain Narin Castle, a revered relic of Iran’s past, graces the heart of the city. Crafted from mud brick, this fortress served its military function until the Qajar era. With a complex, multi-layered design, it was virtually impregnable and held paramount importance in the region. The castle was polygonal in shape, featuring watchtowers on each corner, though only one tower stands today, while the bases of others remain.
Historical accounts recount a deep trench encircling Narin Castle, rendering it inaccessible. Over the centuries, this trench has vanished. The variations in brick sizes (ranging from 43 cm x 43 cm to 22 cm x 22 cm) reveal modifications made to the castle over time. During the Qajar era, the fortress served as the principal residence for local rulers.
Archaeological excavations have unearthed artifacts dating back nearly 4,000 years, prompting speculation that a ziggurat may have once graced the site. Though partly in ruins, ongoing restoration efforts seek to preserve this invaluable castle.
