The Avicenna Mausoleum, also known as the Bu Ali Sina Mausoleum, stands proudly in the heart of Hamadan, Iran. This captivating monument pays tribute to the legendary Persian polymath Avicenna (980–1037 CE), whose groundbreaking work in medicine, philosophy, and the sciences has left a lasting legacy. Today, the site is an iconic symbol of Hamadan and a must-see cultural attraction for visitors.
The current mausoleum was completed in 1954, replacing an earlier structure that was sadly demolished in 1950. Its architectural design was inspired by the UNESCO-listed Qabus Tower in northeastern Iran and was brought to life by the prominent Iranian architect Hooshang Seyhoun. The design reflects both Avicenna’s era and his profound contributions to various fields of knowledge.
Spanning over 3,090 square meters and rising to a height of 28 meters, the Avicenna Mausoleum blends elements of pre-Islamic and Islamic Persian architecture. The complex includes a grand tower with twelve granite pillars, symbolizing the twelve scientific disciplines Avicenna mastered. Additionally, ten columns in the iwan (porch) represent the ten centuries that have passed since his death.
The structure’s lower section features rugged stone, symbolizing Avicenna’s strength and perseverance, while the smooth upper elements reflect his refined intellect and precision. This beautiful contrast captures both his character and his scientific brilliance.
The entrance, located on the eastern side, leads to a museum showcasing Avicenna’s tombstone, a collection of ancient medicinal herbs, Persian carpets, and historical manuscripts. There’s also a small library, offering insight into the scientific advancements of his time. Notably, the tomb of the celebrated Persian poet Aref Qazvini is also located within the complex.
A semicircular garden and a statue of Avicenna holding a book further enhance the site’s elegance, honoring one of the most influential thinkers of the Islamic Golden Age.
The Avicenna Mausoleum is open to visitors daily:
