Ali Sadr Cave, located 70 kilometers north of Hamadan, is a breathtaking natural attraction and one of the world’s longest navigable water caves. This mesmerizing site draws thousands of visitors every year, offering an unforgettable journey through its crystal-clear underground waterways and ancient rock formations.
Geological studies show that Ali Sadr Cave dates back to the Jurassic era, over 190 million years ago. It was likely known in ancient times, as evidenced by an old inscription near the entrance, possibly from the Achaemenid era. However, the cave was forgotten for centuries until its rediscovery in 1963 by local villagers. Archaeological excavations revealed pottery, jugs, and paintings estimated to be more than 12,000 years old.
Ali Sadr Cave is truly a geological marvel. With a constant internal temperature of 16°C and a natural ventilation system, the cave offers a comfortable climate year-round. The cave chambers rise to 40 meters in height, and the water depth reaches up to 14 meters. Visitors can explore the stunning interiors by paddle boat, gliding through subterranean lakes, passing under soaring arches, and admiring colorful stalactites and stalagmites illuminated by well-placed lights.
The main hall of the cave spans 100 meters by 50 meters and sits at 2,100 meters above sea level. Some sections of the cave remain unexplored, while approximately 3 kilometers are accessible to the public.
The adventure begins with a descent into the cave via stairs leading to the underground pier. From there, paddle boats take visitors on a scenic route through winding passages and water tunnels. Some areas are accessible on foot and allow for close-up views of unique mineral formations.
Ali Sadr Cave is open all year, but the best seasons to visit are spring and summer, when Hamadan’s climate is milder. A standard visit takes approximately two hours. The cave is open daily:

Autumn & Winter: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
