Arg of Karim Khan or Karim Khan Citadel
This citadel is one of the spectacular citadels of the Zand dynasty which is located in downtown Shiraz. When Karim Khan chose Shiraz as the capital, he built this citadel as his residence. Also, it was used as a prison in the Pahlavi dynasty.
This citadel was built in one year by the most skilled architects of its time, and materials of it were from other countries. After Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar conquered Shiraz, Because of enmities between him and Karim Khan, he ordered to destruction of some of Karim Khan’s buildings. Arg of Karim Khan remained and turned into a government house.
Architecture
The shape of this citadel is rectangular, which is divided into residential and military sections. The area of this citadel is 13 thousand square meters. The architecture of it is similar to the structures of Isfahan, which is an introverted type. It means that its exterior is very simple, but magnificent decorations are used inside. When you enter this citadel, you will notice a painting on top of the entrance that shows the battle between Rostam and the White Demon. The residential part of this citadel is on the north, south, and west sides. In its halls, wooden windows with colored glasses are used. There is a bathroom left in the southeast of Arg of Karim Khan.
Visiting Hours
Visiting hours of Karim Khan Citadel in the first six months of the year are from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and in the second six months of the year from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
