History

Gahar Lake, believed to have originated from a significant earthquake, gained recognition in the late 19th century as it nestled amidst towering mountains.

Description

Nestled in a secluded valley among the Oshtrankooh mountains, southeast of Doroud city and east of Khorramabad, Gahar Lake sits at an elevation of approximately 2400 meters in a pristine, protected zone. This natural gem in the heart of the eastern Iranian mountains remains untouched by harmful human activities, maintaining its pure and unspoiled state.

Gahar Lake comprises two distinct parts: a larger section with depths ranging from 4 to 28 meters, and a smaller part spanning about 5 hectares with shallower depths, allowing the observation of fish through its clear waters. The rocky shoreline discourages swimming, and swimming in Gahar Lake is generally prohibited. The lake is surrounded by a lush forest boasting a diverse array of plants, shrubs, and trees, including oak, almond, elm, walnut, fig, and more. The area is also home to various wildlife, such as goats, gazelles, leopards, wolves, wild boars, hyenas, foxes, snakes, turtles, and a variety of birds like eagles and partridges.

Fed by the cold, clear, and sparkling waters of the Tapleh River, in addition to springs and snowfall, Gahar Lake’s geographical location leads to its surface freezing during snowy winters.

Gahar Lake and its tranquil, picturesque landscape offer an ideal camping destination in Iran. The serene lake surprises visitors with its calmness, beauty, and peaceful ambiance. Activities like mountain climbing, fishing, hiking, and strolls contribute to the most relaxing experiences in this pristine landscape.
