Description

In addition to the iconic turquoise mosques and domes of Isfahan, visiting the Holy Savior Cathedral, also known as the Church of the Saintly Sisters and Vank Cathedral, is a refreshing experience. While there are many beautiful and famous churches in the Armenian neighborhood of Isfahan and other parts of the country, especially in the northwest, Vank Cathedral holds a special place as the focal point of the Christian community.

Vank Cathedral uniquely blends the varied Persian style of architecture and decoration with Armenian and Christian culture, setting it apart from European churches. Tall walls surround this precious gem, separating it from the outside world. Upon passing through the entrance door and the clock tower above, the extraordinary grace of Vank Cathedral is revealed.

With a rectangular plan and brick construction, the church features a dome, tall walls, a high ceiling, and a bell tower. The interior facades are adorned with delightful wall paintings depicting lively colors of Bible scenes, each telling a religious story. Among them, the Last Judgment and the Tower of Babel are particularly charming frescoes that fascinate visitors of any religion.

Additionally, the cathedral museum houses a precious collection of ancient illustrated Bibles, some of which date back to the 10th century. Visitors can even view a prayer written on a strand of hair, gifted to Vank Cathedral, under a microscope. Another section of the museum commemorates the Armenian Genocide of 1915 in the Ottoman Empire through memorials, documents, and photos.
