History
Originally a three-floor Timurid palace, Ali Qapu Palace underwent significant restoration during the reign of Shah Abbas the Great in the late 16th century. As a result, the palace was expanded to include six stories.
Description
Ali Qapu Palace, a magnificent architectural masterpiece holds an esteemed position in the UNESCO World Heritage list as an integral part of Naqsh-e Jahan Square in Isfahan. Originally serving as the seat of government and a venue for formal visits, this palace was meticulously designed to leave a lasting impression and showcase the grandeur befitting of a flourishing empire.
Situated on the western side of the square, this six-story palace stands tall at 38 meters. It boasts a captivating terrace adorned with 18 intricately patterned columns, complemented by a beautifully decorated wooden ceiling. This elevated terrace not only offers a mesmerizing view of the prestigious buildings surrounding the Isfahan main square but also serves as a perfect vantage point for the king to witness enthralling polo games held in the vicinity.
Originally, the Ali Qapu Palace was adorned with exquisite colors of red, blue, and gold, with walls adorned with captivating hunting scenes. However, the palace’s décor has changed over time notably during the Qajar era and after the Islamic revolution.
